LEO shoots himself in Murray

Postby cablecutter on Fri 29 Jan 2010 1:27 pm

SANDY, Utah (AP) -- A Murray police officer is in good condition after accidentally shooting himself in the hip.

Murray police Detective Kenny Bass says the officer accidentally shot himself while getting ready for work at his Sandy home Thursday afternoon. He was taken to a hospital in good condition.

Bass says the officer is a 14-year veteran of the department. He says the officer was putting the gun in its holster when the incident happened.

Bass says Murray police policy generally calls for weapons to be loaded when an officer is on duty or preparing for work.

Not really an option for police duty holsters, this is one of the reasons I really like the Serpa with the paddle attachment. I just leave the gun locked in place in the holster and put the holster on and take it off. The firearm's trigger stays completely protected the whole time so there's absolutely no chance of a ND. I even leave the gun in the holster while in the safe. It only comes out to shoot and to clean.

Not that you can't just be careful to keep stuff out of the trigger guard while holstering, but completely eliminating the possibility is even better.

I was up watching stupidest criminals last night and a video came on of 2 BG's trying to rob a pharmacy. The pharmacist go'es to pull his gun from his fancy paddle type holster and ends up showing the BG his gun still locked in the holster and useless!! Had it not been for his wife having the state of mind to come back around and get the gun and shoot the BG's. It would have been on a different show!
This would make me think twice about using one. But I've never CC'ed or used one. However this was my concern when I was looking at them.
sorry a bit off topic. :hijack:

The article is very thin on facts. Doesn't say what kind of gun it is, nor why the ND occurred. Maybe some material got caught inside the trigger guard or something, but most NDs are because a person gets careless about where that trigger finger is when handling the gun -- but I don't have any idea what was the cause in this case.

Anyway, OUCH!

Sounds like a Glock case with one on the chamber
but agree there is no accidents when handleing a gun just careless of the user.
