Does anybody know a good sharpening service that's: a) competent (is able to put a new edge on without having to grind off 1/2" of material) and b) not too expensive?

I have done this many times with Leatherman, and have always been impressed with the service. They never have even asked for a receipt or other proof of purchase.
Give it a try.
