A nice thing to have, but certainly not a 'must have' for an AR. It clears up the sight picture quite a bit, and helps for longer shots, but iron sights, or a red dot optic are still pretty darn effective.
One thing I noticed is the weight. For as light as they are, it still is a noticeable weight that is added. One nice thing is the Larue QD mount, which you can take off or put on in about a second. It may help bridge the gap between a CQB weapon and a sniper rifle, and let you 'stretch your legs' a little longer. But, if you know your 'mission' ahead of time and need distance, I might opt for a different long gun with a dedicated 4X scope, or the like...
