Hello Smiths,

I have a friend with a shotgun who is considering having the barrel trimmed down to something like 20"-22". It is a short stocked rig, and she is considering it for usage by humans under 4 feet tall.

I have seen ads on ksl.com for a barrel trim and re-crown; do smiths also cut choke tube threads too? It'd be nice if a barrel trim and a choke tube would still allow this friends kids to break some clays. How much would this be?

I know, "go buy a youth 20 gauge 870", but can someone price this for me?

Just threading the barrel could very well run you $150 with the chokes included. Cutting/refinishing the barrel and installing a new bead site would be more. And for someone that short, you may want to shorten the stock a little. By that time, could be close to the cost of a youth model.

Now all of those operations are within the realm of a handy, careful, adventurous do-it-yourselfer. But with the exception of shortening the stock and installing the bead site, the rest of the operations involve tools that are specialized and expensive. Unless you could sell them for nearly what you pay for them, the cost would not be much cheaper than just having a gunsmith do it for you.
