Sons Marlin 60 keeps jamming

Postby Scherzburg » Wed 02 Dec 2009 10:09 pm

My son's Marlin 60 keeps jamming after every 3-4 rounds. We have tried to clean it as much as possible without damaging the action. Does anyone know if you can take it apart and clean it with minor mechanical skills? or should I use it to prop open a door and buy him a new one?
Any help would be appreciated!

It's not so much that the gun does or doesn't do what it's supposed to, it's simply not running anymore. So if it doesn't run, what I do is sort of wang on it until it does.

It's not a terriblly complicated gun. What are you using to clean the action with?

It's possible it could be ammo related. My new Marlin Model 60 hates Winchester Wildcats, but does quite well on Remington Golden Bullets. So I save the Wildcats for the Henry lever action, which will eat anything, as long as it's .22lr, .22l, or .22s. :D

It's true most .22 semi-autos are ammo picky. The one that they all seem to like the most is the CCI stingers. They have the highest velocity of all the .22 rounds out there. That could be what you need as well.

You guys are the best! My son and I have had a look at the links and are going to give it a try tonigh.
We have been using the regular solvent and lubricante, I think it's no.9? As far as the action, I have been using surgical locking hemostats (I sell medical supplies and have some instrument's here and there). I have tried to be careful with the solvents because I once heard that it was not a good thing to get alot of it where you couldnt wipe it up.
One of the site's xRapidDavex provided mentioned a toothbrush. Here I am trying to be as delicate and precise as I can and I should have been using a toothbrush.
Many thanks to you all who responded. Ever since I had to leave LE I have not found the comrodery I am starting to feel from my new friends at UCC.com
Much appreciated! :patriot:

I also get in there with q-tips and a set of precision probes with a patch on narrow crevices.

You can find them in the tools section of Home Depot.

I have the same rifle and the same symptoms. I've found that certain ammo (Federal in the bulk pack) seem to jam more than anything. I've seemed to cure the problem by putting a drop of lubricant oil into the action prior to each use and using good ammo. I love the gun. It's dead on accurate and perfect for my four little kids to learn to shoot with...

Oh, and, by the way, when you reinstall the recoil spring...

You want to make sure it's good and clean use Tetra Gun Action Blaster. I've never used anything that washes out carbon, grit, and grease faster or easier. Black gunk will run out but the cleaner will completely dry in a matter of seconds. A work of warning though. All the protective oils will be gone from the pores of the metal. You will need to replace it with clean oil to make sure nothing rusts.

Thanks again. I haven't had (made) time to do it. But my sons b-day is Friday the 11th and I want to have it done by then. I am going to get him a shoulder strap for the Marlin as his b-day present and take him shooting as long as he wants Saturday. :party3:

Good luck. If the snow's coming down sideways on Saturday, he may not want to shoot very long.

Incidentally, Rimfire Central.com is an excellent source of information on all things rimfire, including an outstanding sub-forum on the Marlin model 60. Here's a link if you're interested.
