So, I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this question in. Mod, please feel free to move it if it belongs somewhere else.
I recently moved to a new apartment. It's a mother-in-law basement apartment. I went shooting this weekend and noticed little brown spots on the barrels of several of my guns, including a stainless steel handgun. I know that stainless doesn't mean it can't rust, but I thought they were more resistant to it.
At any rate, I purchased a humidity meter ($5 from HomeDepot) and found out the humidity in the closet I keep the guns in varies from 55-73%! That's huge! My question is, are there any good suggestions on what to do for humidity? I noticed that the one gun I had in a gun sock (versus a case) didn't have any rust deposits on it. I was thinking of getting one of those "Damp-Rid" buckets, but I don't know how well they work... I know I can get a full-blown dehumidifier, but they are pretty pricey (though cheaper than replacing all of my guns...). I would get a safe (on my need to buy list), but we are moving in less than a year and I really don't have room for one right now.
Further, what should I do to treat the guns to clean and prevent rust? I scrubbed the stainless gun with a bronze gun brush and gun oil which took the spots off (no pitting, that goodness!). For the blued ones, I just used a cotton cloth and gun oil. Thanks so much for any help and advice!
Someday I'll put something witty here...
