The only thing I can think of is that it makes it easier for you to find out if I have a criminal record or any outstanding warrants. If I had a record, that might make you a little more suspicious, but it wouldn't prove anything. If I had an outstanding warrant, you'd haul me in for it, but that has nothing to do with your initial suspicion.
With the ID I get your picture and tangible evidence that it is you...
That what is me? All it does is verify that the name I gave you is my name. So what? What does that tell you about whether or not I've committed a crime? Except in cases of intoxication, of course, where as you mentioned it's not the name but the opportunity to watch me fumble for my wallet.
Cops Closet wrote:When you are detained and I am holding on to your ID it helps with the detention because I have your property... so if you choose to run (or kill me) I have something that will help us find you later...and for this reason you are less likely to run.
Okay, that makes sense. It's a very light passive restraint. More reason for me not to give it to you

I can see that. Another alternative is to position yourself and your notepad so that you can still see the subject while writing, but taking the card is easier.
Cops Closet wrote:For DUI purposes if I ask for your card it gives me an opportunity to watch what you are doing... how you use your motor skills in retrieving your card... and also give me a chance (without you watching me watching you) to smell your vehicle and look around for items in plain view. I have had people drop dope and related items out of their wallet while trying to get their DL... I probably should not reveal these trade secrets but there you go... I hope this answers your questions!
Very interesting. And more reasons not to give you my ID unless I'm actually obligated to.
