I wish the people of Utah would soon wake up to the reality that people like Gov. Herbert and the Tea Party are not your friends. They are part of the establishment oppressing and destroying your rights. Until people realize that the Republican party is not your friend and they stop voting for either of these parties we will continue on the slippery path.
When will people simply wake up?...
Faced with the lies of Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, How are you not able to see that these men are not working for you and lie to you every 4 years to get elected? How can you forget their lies from 4 years earlier and expect any different results. Stop voting for these Republican and Democrat stooges. You can't be a nominee of one of these parties without being a stooge. When will people simply wake up?
I think you paint with a very broad, and unjustly applied brush.
And for the specific topic of this forum, that is the right to own and carry firearms for an effective self-defense, it is demonstrably false.
For the past 17 years Utah has moved, however slowly and carefully, in a nearly straight line toward
ever greater respect for our right to own and carry firearms for an effective self-defense.
We might well argue about who is our "friend" vs who is doing right, by our rights, out of simple political expediency. But at the end of they day, does it really matter? A guy who votes the right way because he wants to remain in office has voted the right way. Why do I care what his motivation is, or even bother to delve into that motivation? If he loves me, but votes against my RKBA, he still voted against my RKBA. If he hates me, but fears me enough to vote as I want so as to keep his seat, he votes correctly. All I care about is the votes.
And in everything there are pragmatic realities to deal with. I served for a time as the treasurer for the Libertarian Party of Utah. In addition to some maturing political views as I married and had children, do you want to know how many political races I materially affected by devoted hours every week to the LPUtah! The answer is none. We never managed to hold even the margin of victory with any of our candidates.
Now, do you want to know how many elections I've helped effect as a delegate to the county and State GOP in Utah? Five races in my district alone leading to the retirement of one gun grabbing legislator and his replacement by someone who votes correctly at least 90% of the time on RKBA issues, plus helping retire Bennett. That same result is multiplied across a lot of other districts in this State to the effect that our legislature is quite good on RKBA. Not perfect. And not moving as fast toward RKBA utopia as we might like. But good, and moving in the right direction very consistently if a little slowly.
I know there are many issues in addition to RKBA. But opinions on those vary and for everyone one of us who would take a position on one side of immigration, or the definition of marriage, or taxes, or welfare, or asset forfeiture, or UFOs, or any other issue, we can find someone who takes a different position among our allies who support RKBA.
We've all got to decide how best to defend our freedom. And if someone believes that working outside both the major parties is really the right answer, I'll respect that. But in my own life, I've decided that for now, I'm most effective using my limited time inside an existing party and working to encourage those people who are actually elected to the legislature to vote the right way on RKBA (and the other issues that are important to me).
