There is a bill before the legislature, H.B. 242 - Criminal Penalty for Animal Cruelty, which has passed out of committee that would elevate certain misdemeanors to felony status. This is a very bad trend for lots of relatively minor crimes.
I think that deliberate cruelty to animals is disgusting. But elevating it to a felony? Under Federal law ( GCA '68 ), that automatically and permanently causes loss of the right to possess or own a firearm for life.
