Sunday's Tribune posted an article about open carry which was pretty negative about guns in general. This is what I wrote back to the opinion section...we'll see if it gets printed:

In regards to the article about putting your guns away, I would like to offer the following. While I do not necessarily agree with people open carrying just to prove a point, the fact is that it is not illegal. There may be a few individuals who choose to carry openly, however this is not the way most people carry a firearm, as most carry concealed and you would never know. I have not seen mass hysteria because someone has a gun in a holster walking through a store or anywhere else. Most people don’t even notice the few times it occurs. Do you or anyone else think that the common criminal who uses a gun in a crime carries it openly in a holster on their hip? No. The criminal runs in with the gun waving around threatening people or shooting. Show me just one incident where someone carrying openly in a holster is the one shooting the place up. Are they waving it around? No, it's just sitting there. Perhaps the hysteria is because this thing is going to magically jump out of the holster and start shooting the place up. Get real. It's not the people who are legally carrying firearms for their protection that you have to be afraid of.

The overwhelming majority of concealed permit holders are law-abiding citizens. Look at statistics where armed citizens have stopped crimes in progress and you will be amazed at the numbers. People should support laws, lawmakers and judges who act against the criminals and stop trying to put stupid restraints on law-abiding citizens. Those persons who did choose to carry openly did nothing wrong. Also, don't say that our Legislature here in Utah has created the Wild West for standing up for citizens' rights. They have instead created more of a tame west compared to other "gun free zones" where shooting incidents seem to always happen. I applaud our Legislature for it. Stand up for enforcing laws that are already on the books and send criminals to jail with required minimum sentences when they commit crimes with a gun instead of more unnecessary and hysterical gun control laws that don’t work and only affect and restrict law abiding citizens.

All the hysterics should move to a model gun control area such as Washington D.C. where as a citizen you can't even own a firearm to protect yourself in your own home, and it has one of the worst crime and murder rates in the country. Right along with New York, California, etc. Works well doesn't it? The police cannot be everywhere to protect everyone all the time. In fact, if you read Warren vs. District of Columbia, the Superior Court ruled that police have absolutely NO duty to protect individuals, only society as a whole. This has been upheld in several other cases across the country. So, the courts there in our Nations Capital say the police don't have to protect you and the city says you don't have the right to protect yourself either.

Maybe people can just throw their cell phones at the bad guy when they get put on hold after getting a busy signal from 911 for 3 minutes. Or, they can just sit in a corner, hold hands and pray that they won't be the next victim when the bad guy opens the closet door they're hiding in waiting for help during the next mall or school shooting. Maybe, we should ban all weapons so only the bad guys have them like in D.C.

Or, just maybe that horrible person with that scary death machine on his hip as it was called might just save you too.

I don't have the link for the article, but it started I believe on the bottom right front page of the Utah section of the Tribune by a writer named Walsh. Was entitled "put your guns away" or something close to that. Was a pretty big article.

Thanks Dave, a well written response.

Yes I did read the article by Rebecca Walsh and it was pure tripe. Having been one of the 13 individuals, along with you, TJ and others, I know she was not present and therefore has little business writing an op ed piece she didn't even research in person or ask questions of those who were there.
Frankly the comments on ***** size were not acceptable and only a moron would use such a baseless and vulgar argument. The fear mongering of idiots who know nothing and think they know it all is truly despicable.

As I reviewed a large number of the 81 comments (at the time I read them--probably more now), the overwhelming majority opinion was that carrying in any manner was appropriate per our constitution and should not even be an issue. It is the hate mongers and liberal wackos who care little for their own lives who seem to be so **** bent for leather to make sure they, if confronted by a mad gunman, can take as many innocent people to their deaths as they can, with themselves, because of their fear for guns now, and their inadequate ability to deal with the saneness of lawful carry, regardless of how it is done.

Now, if those same people, like Walsh, could only see that when the Wild West was in the making that eastern cities had much more violence and murder than the west, and still do to this day, maybe they would change their tune--if they could think themselves out of the paper box they are hiding in.

The reality of things is, as was pointed out over and over again in the comments section; The Constitution Consists of the Bill of Rights which includes the right to defense, especially against an evil government, and 1st Amendments rights, as well as all others can only exist so long as it is in place. The sooner these nut cases actually get a brain cell that works the light bulb could come on.

For those of us who were in attendance the Mayor did not cower, but was quite respectful to TJ and the rest of us. What no one has said yet is that the people on the board whom TJ was told to file his complaint with, were sitting behind the council members because they are required to be at those meetings. So they heard the message loud and clear. Hopefully they begin to show a little more restraint, compassion and integrity when they deal with the cries of misguided
individuals who are afraid of their own shadow. A few questions of the fearful person such as "what is he/she doing?," "Are they acting in a threatening manner?," "Are they in the process of shooting or robbing the place you are at?," could quell the concerns of the police easily. They could then use resources better. (on the other hand, maybe having 10 Police or Sheriffs' Deputies taken away from illegally trolling shopping malls (without permission from owners to do so) so they can impound someone's car for being a day out of inspection might be healthier for the community?) OK--Sarcasm aside, lol, proper use of resources, officers, would be a better use of taxpayers moneys if questions like these were asked before sending in the whole department. A simple detainment lasting no more than 5 minutes should be all that ever occurs unless the person is in process of committing a serious crime against the public at large.

The meeting was healthy for the community because it brings discussion and opens the publics mind to what their rights are. That is always a plus in my book.

<sarcasm>Wow that was a very well written and totally unbiased piece</sarcasm>

Seriously, I was there last Tuesday and I don't remember anyone "storming" anything. Still who needs facts when you have papers to sell. So the question I have is: Who at the Tribune is going to write the counter piece? Anyone? Bueller?

Just as an additional thought; maybe we should invite Rebecca to our next open carry outing. Let her see the real people behind the "portable killing machines".

We already live in "a society in which it is an unconscious emblem of everyday life that folks move about with 'portable killing machines' [wrapped around] their bodies," but nobody has asked us to conceal our cars.

What a bunch of mindless babbling.

She is right about people walking around armed. But these people are out to do harm, they are the BG. They are looking for there next victims. Do you hear her are Gunn say anything about them NO, it is always the legal gun owner they grip about. Boy what a bunch of hypocrites.

That's just sad. She feels she has to show how bad we are just to prove she's right. I didn't know the news media was being used by a single "reporter" to sling mud against the general public. Maybe she's just too good for everyone else out there...
