Hey all, been looking at my guns and decided I needed a long gun that wasn't bolt action. I hear great things about the AR-15 but know nothing about it. Anyone willing to post up some links or info about them and educate me. Thanks.

Why dont we start out with answering your questions. That way we know where to start. There is a lot to consider. length, caliber, manufacturer, ect. Where would you like to start?

Well im really looking for a home defense/west desert blaster rifle in .223 or 5.56. I've got a remmington 700 in .300 winmag for my long range needs.

So heres my questions.

Better to build or buy first AR-15?
What are the best quality companies?
What are the must have componets?
Whats does a quality, not all the bells and whistles just well made reliable and solid, AR usually cost?
Thanks alot for the help. I've been a sks, ak, mak 90 shooter forever but i've sold them all and am looking for a scary black gun to fill my fun gun needs.

1. First I would suggest the 5.56 because you can shoot .223 in the 5.56 rifle bet not the other way around. Just not a good idea.
2. You can spend anywhere from $800 to $2000 on a good AR depending on the maker and the configuration.
3. Quality companies...Colt (if you can find it), DPMS, Olimpic Arms, Bushmaster are the more famous ones. There are other good companies out there. You just wont see them on the gun store shelf.
4. You can buy one with the must have componants. To build one I would have someone sit down with you and figure out what you want to do with it, what bells and whistles you are looking for, and what it will take to get all that done. Then you can see how much it will take to build one and weather it is worth doing that instead of buying one off the rack. I'd be happy to sit down and discuss this with you. There is a lot of aftermarket upgrades that work better than the originals and theres a lot of stuff that you would have just because, "the chicks dig it". We can sort through all that. Let me know.

Either way you end up with a great rifle! Here's a link to some very good building tips, manuals and other AR info. If you decide to build one I'd highly recommend taking Joseph up on his offer to help.

For a complete rifle it's hard to go wrong with any of them. For parts start your search here http://www.brownells.com.

For mine it was the ultra-match barrel and trigger kit.

Wait, I'm a reloader and have always thought that 5.56 Nato and .223 Remington were the SAME cartridge. Is that not right???

Even though they call them by different names, the exact measurements, sizes, etc., of the 2 cartridges are identical, are they not????
