Have you seen the stopping power of the mighty 45-70 Govt that he tested on the box o' truth??? He placed some bricks behind the regular mix of wallboard and water and the 45-70 round went through all of the wallboard, all of the water, AND the bricks and was last seen speeding toward eastern Mississippi.

My dad had a GREAT pit-bull... I loved that dog!

But, from experience I have learned that pit-bulls do not belong around children. They can be GREAT adult-family dogs, if well-trained, however.

She is 5 years old and raised around cats and kids, also has been fixed. She is very protective of the grand kids. When they are here she doesn't leave there sides. If they are in the back playing, you better not come in the gate, as she gets between them and you and starts barking and the fur on her back stands up. I was raised around them and the American Bull Dog and they are great dogs. What makes them mean are owners and breeding. We raised 5 kids with them with no problems. Just make sure you know the breeders and the temperament of the parents.

I'm in the same scenerio except with two Chow Chows. Everyone thinks of them as agressive dogs. They are when they need to be. Same things happens when someone comes to the door unexpected - hair stands straight up and they'll make it known that they're there. However, with proper training and socializing at a young age, they're great around others, even kids. Don't believe me, check out this link. We have nieces and nephews that come over all the time and play with our Chows. And last weekend, we took them on the MS walk; thousands of people, no problems at all.

I always find it amusing when I open the door to the alarm-system sales people before they even touch my doorbell. Then I ask them, "Can your system tell me that someone's coming like mine?" Ah, good times.

If you have a 12 gauge shotgun, hollow-point slugs do exist-though they are usually only sold to law enforcement. It's not a law or anything they just don't really sell them to citizens apparently. We got some when cheaperthandirt.com had a police dept cancel an order. Pretty much the ultimate stop-them-in-their-tracks home defense ammo I think.

They are not unique and I have several boxes of them. I might ask if you have any idea of the destructive power of those?

Check out the following links and then decide if you want to shoot one of those in your home.

The link goes directly to the portion that talks about 12 gauge slugs, but there is a lot of good reading before the discussion of slugs about other rounds, that you could read too.

I can say that our pit bull did not have mean owners... we were very friendly with our dog and I see no reason why he aggressively attacked me (well, I won't say *NO* reason... but no justified reason, no other good dog would've reacted that way under the same conditions). However, you did mention "breeding" and I have no idea what our dog's parents were like.

Owning a pitbull is like owning a hi-point. Some people love them and never have a single problem, other have nothing but issues. :lol2:

The pit bull was breed to fight, but not to be aggressive towards humans. During the early years of fighting most of the time they did not fight to the death. When a dog was winning the match was called, the handlers had to brake it up. So they would use what was called a brake stick, insert between the teeth and pull back to the end of the jaw to brake the hold. They breed them not to turn on there handlers or be aggressive to humans. It has been with in the last 25 or so years that they have be breed to be aggressive towards humans. That is why you have to be careful and know the breeder see the parents and how they act. Yes you can get a bad one from time to time, but with the right breeding it is not as often as the news puts it up to be.

Lord how I love that antiquated cartridge!

My father had an ND inside his house once with a Colt SAA with one of my plinking loads (250 gr 840 fps out of a 7") which are very light loads. It went through 5 layers of drywall (2 walls and the celling), 3/4" plywood, and the shingles on the roof. Having seen that I stopped worrying about over penetration as it seems anything that will really stop an attacker will go through all my interior walls. My "go to gun" was a Marlin 1894 carbine in 45 Colt with really hot loads (250 gr gold dot @ 1540 fps) which is in my opinion a **** fine home defense weapon; I now use an AR carbine.
