I have a big bore blow gun the same type made by Cold Steel. I Was wondering if anyone else had any experience w/ a blow gun meant for hunting. Have you hunted w/ one? What were the results? Any pointers on how to aim one? Any info would be appreciated.

Aim a blow gun as you would anything else. Hunting with one can mean you may be leading your target, but the sound from blowing the dart may stop or startle your prey. A good lucky well aimed shot could take something down by penetrating the spinal cord with a practice dart. They work well. Might even help you get rid of mice or rats or other varmints.

I don't have a blowgun. So take everything I have to say with a grain of salt or, maybe a pound of salt.

I have been eyeing them on Cold Steels website. I know that cold steel claims you can use their blowguns to hunt with. I guess that is what the broad head darts are for. Historically hunters have used a verity of lethal poisons to take game with a blowgun.

How they are able to eat the now poisoned meat is a mystery I have yet to solve.

I have had one for a long time and I love it for killing rats and other small pests though I don't think it very capable of killing anything much bigger unless you are a better shot then i'll ever be or poison the darts of course... for some reason carrying around a bunch of sharp poisoned needles has never appealed to me much, it's way to easy to prick yourself with those things. I have tried a lot of darts and the small metal broadhead ones seem to work the best. I have even tried some huge carbon fiber tips for the darts but they cause more problems then they are worth.

I grew up playing with blow guns. We'd have wars, steal the flag, night games, and do a number of other things that I won't admit to. A decent shot would stick in your leg through a pair of Levi's and we'd always use eye protection. I'd guess that I've put 20,000+ darts down the tube.

I prefer to shoot blowguns with both eyes open. If only one is open it's hard for me to aim. The "double vision" of the barrel is close to the same spot when you look at the end of the barrel. So just imagine you've got a single front sight to work with. Obviously you have to compensate for drop and and wind more so than with a firearm. It's like a sniper. You estimate the distance and then make the necessary adjustments. It's a lot easier to shoot targets at a lower elevation because you don't have to make as drastic of adjustments. On flat terrain, you'll get the best range at about a 35-45 degree angle or so.

Try taping two of them together to make a double barrel (if your type of dart gun permits). 3 or more probably won't work. We've tried with every imaginable configuration above 2.

It's worth pointing out that our darts were made out of magazine paper (....and yes they would still draw blood). I can't say that I'd recommend dart gun wars with metal darts as they could really do some damage to soft tissue.

This topic makes me want to get out my old blow-Gun.

I'm really amazed at how easy they are to aim and become very accurate. It is almost like it is a natural eye and mouth connection....developed over millions of years of spitting tobacco in the eyes of dinasours...or something.
I really like the choice of ammo also. I believe mine has a 40cal bore. I have used the solid plastic plastic rounds, the standard sharp points, and the broad heads.
They also have the 40cal paint ball rounds. Another cheap ammo for the 40cal is the use of the plastic push-pins, like you use for a cork board....great for when you get bored at the office.

I have often wondered if there are some really hardcore enthusiasts that get into the sport...? Kind of like those that get into Black Powder and have rendezvous where they grow beards and dress up in mountain man outfits?
Don't know if I want to get that involved...running around in a loincloth and sticking a Bone through my nose is a little much! I wonder if the bone through the nose is used for an improved aiming system??? hmmmm...

I think it was developed as a equilibrium decoration, similar to cat whiskers. :shocked:

I'd be willing to teach anyone who wants how to make the darts that we always used. To make them you need a magazine and clear tape. That's it. I can make about 3 per minute so I used to do it while I watched TV or movies. We used 1/2 inch PVC for the blowgun and usually cut it about 4' long. Of course we'd tape them together and I'd usually have a 12" double barreled "sidearm" as well.
