I wouldn't be surprised to find that this porn is coming from the actions of the anti folks. If you put enough of this junk on, we will all have to leave the forum.

There has got to be a way to moderate the posts of new members until you can make sure they are on the up and up.

I agree, it cannot be that complicated to get this trash off the site. It doesn't matter who is doing it or why, we just need it gone! I would love to see some sort of verification for new members, or at least allow some more people to delete them! Maybe allow many people to be able to delete a new members posts until they reach a certain post count or something? I don't know. But if this software has no way to solve this problem, we need to go with something that can.

I sincerely apologize for this problem.
Believe me, I'm trying hard to correct it.
When I can talk to Thomas, I'll discuss these recommendations, plus other ideas.
Jeff, I just wanted to thank you for all that you do on this site. I know that it really is impossible to keep the spammers out unless you moderate/approve every single post from every single member. To me, it's worth it to put up with the occasional spam post in order to have free-flowing posts from legitimate forum members. If you end up having to approve every post before it appears on the site, nobody will want to post here at all, especially new members. I think you do a great job considering that you undoubtedly have a life outside of the internet. :) Thanks! :D

I hope that no one is taking these complaints personally. (unless they are the spammers!) There is simply a problem that the community would like to get fixed, thats all. It isn't an attack on any other legitimate members or operators of this forum. It just isn't the forum for that kind of stuff, there are other places for that if that is what people are looking for. Speaking for myself, I just think that there must be a way to signifcantly reduce this problem, since it doesn't seem to appear this frequently on some other larger gun forums that I frequent. It just seems that we are having more then our fair share of it based on our small population.

I do appreciate all the work that is done on this forum, and understand the volunteer nature of the work. I think it would be a fair bet to say we all appreciate it very much.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that, we aren't here picking on anyone except the spammers. Lets just work together to reduce this problem as much as possible. I am certainly willing to do some of the work if those in power wish to delegate.

I think one of the problems is that Jeff is the only person empowered to moderate the Forum (outside of Thomas, and Thomas isn't here much) and Jeff has a life outside of the forum. Perhaps another couple of moderators would provide greater coverage and we could get this stuff yanked more quickly.

Jeff, I just want you to know that I appreciate all you do with this forum. My frustration is with the spammers. I just had to laugh though. I was reading the AOL thread, thinking it was new. Then I saw the old dates on the posts, and went directly to the end and saw a porn posting was the only new thing on the thread. Oh well, says I, it was OK to refresh my memory about the AOL debacle.

Thank you all for your patience.

And I want to thank Thomas for helping us out. There are no longer any unmoderated forums here. Also, I now have the privilege to ban users who abuse our hospitality.

This is a family-friendly forum. No pornography will be tolerated here. Anyone who posts anything of a pornographic nature will be banned. There will be no second-chances.

I do apologize for the recent troubles with this. After a detailed analysis during which a gaggle of users got banned, I've found that a lot of this comes from Russia, plus some from Germany and a smattering of other places.

Let the banning begin...

FYI, these are automated posts made by spam 'bots. It's not limited to just this forum, but is a common problem.

There are a variety of remedies, all imperfect.

I deleted 7 porn-posts this morning. It is my intent to visit the forum several times a day; that, coupled with the other folks keeping an eye out for this garbage, should (I hope) keep it down to an acceptable level.

As you note, the various methods to discourage spamming are somewhat imperfect. I think the goal is to control the spamming with as little intrusion as possible in the board usage.

One board I belong to requires approval to join - that may take several days to acquire. Another requires approval of a number of posts, by a moderator, before you can post without moderation. I think this lends less than a hearty welcome to new members. The most successful approach seems to be what is happening here - an eagle eye on what is posted. There will still be some garbage that shows up but it should be deleted and the poster banned within a couple of hours.
