Display "?" regarding "Hot Topics"

I have noticed new behavior with the upgrade that I don't particularly like and was curious if anyone knows whether it's a setting I can change on my end (or whether the admin's can and will)???

On the old board after logging in any new/updated posts within a particular TOPIC/Category would cause that topic to highlight orange so I would know there were new threads to read (I'm sure you all know what I'm referring to so I won't go into more detail than that). Next time I logged in the board would consider that any threads I didn't visit last time were no longer "new" to me and would no longer highlight the TOPIC.

However, on this new board it seems the TOPICS are remaining highlighted through successive logins if I have not actually read every updated thread... which is annoying since some threads I skip reading just based on the title.

Any ideas????

Now the the icon is red instead of orange... It seems to be working fine for me.
I am having the same problem; there is no highlight for forums (main page) or the topics with new posts. Also, I am not staying logged in even if I check the box for automatic login.

I am using Firefox if that makes any difference. 8)

Thanks!
When you search for new posts, it will list the ones that have new posts since your last visit AND any topics that have been posted to in the last day regardless of if you have read them or not (they are new to the board, but you may have read the posts already). The new color (pink) means that there are posts in that topic that you have not read yet (so you know the difference between topics that have newly posted unread posts (flashing pink) and those topics that have been posted to recently.

If you have not read the posts, it would make sense to keep them flashing pink - the board thinks you haven't seen the posts yet and justly so, you haven't. The older method (while you may have liked it), made it so that a screen refresh or accidental closure of a browser window made all the new posts disappear (not cool). If you are not interested in the topic I would suggest just setting your preferences in User Control Panel, Board Preferences, Edit Display Options, Display topics from previous days to a set number of days and just ignoring the topics you are uninterested in until the time has elapsed, then they will not show up in your new posts area. Of course, this could mess things up, so I would personally just click the topic title and then hit back when it's loaded. I read everything, so I guess if you only follow certain topics, this could be annoying.

As far as being a posse member, I like it this way. I can't seem to change anything board wide on my end to help you out - but perhaps Jeff or Thomas have extra options?

I'm having the same problem. Even if I just close the UCC tab and leave the browser open I don't seem to stay logged in. Perhaps we need to readjust our cookies (on the board) so that they stay active longer.

I was having that same problem as well. I cleared out all of my cookies (actually I cleared out EVERYTHING) on FF and restarted.... I *SEEM* to be staying logged in now, we'll see...

As far as the other problem... well, I don't like change but I'll try! :shades:
There will be an ongoing process of finding and correcting all the little nitnoids that bother people. This is a major version upgrade of the phpBB software, so we'll be working to fix things as we find them. This is a learning process for the Posse and Admins as well because of the major feature enhancements and changes.

Please continue to bring up any problems that you know about in this section, although it would be good to look to see if it has been brought up before you do (I'm not referring to anything in this thread).

I've observed the problem of not staying logged in, and that's a high priority to get fixed, but I have no estimate of how long that will take, so please be patient with us.

Thanks!
Jeff,

Do you know if there will be a possible "solution" to the original problem I posted in this thread???
I don't know yet, but it's now in the list to look at.

Thomas says that the non-persistent login problem has been solved.
Please let us know if you still experience problems with that, but you might want to clean the forum cookies and restart your browsers first...

Looks good on my end...

It works now without any cookie tinkering on my end. Thank you gentlemen, great job!

Bane, have you tried clicking on the Mark topics read link that you can find in the top right of each section?
Does that solve your problem?
Bane, If you are at the main forum page there is a link in the top right to mark all posts read. That will do it for the entire site..

Actually, yeah, that looks like it might work! One extra step, but MUCH better than having to click on each individual thread just to mark it.

Thanks Thomas!

I don't understand your process, but I don't bother with marking things read, or looking at individual areas in the forum. I just log in to the main page, click "View new posts" and read everything I haven't read before. Works nicely, and the same on the new site as the old. What am I missing?

Huh... I hadn't thought of doing that... my process on the old board was to just take note of the "Hot" topics (the ones colored brightly) and click on the ones I was interested in... on my next return those same topics would ONLY BE colored brightly again if they had had NEW posts since my last visit (not just ones I hadn't even seen yet).

But I like YOUR approach too... I'll give it a whirl!
Sorry bane, maybe I didn't understand what you were talking about. I too just click "View new posts". I couldn't really see what you were talking about.
Yeah, it's hard to explain I guess if you've never read boards in this fashion... I don't know how better to explain it (textually) other than to repeat it in a different fashion and with more detail.

When you first log in to the site you see a list of ALL of the "TOPICS", right? Well you will notice that any TOPICS which contain THREADS that you have not yet read are sort of "highlighted" (in this version the icon is READ vice BLACK... in the old version I forget already but I think they were orange vice black). This lets you know that that TOPIC contains something you haven't seen yet. But some TOPICS just don't interest me so I don't read them very often (for example, "Edged Weapons"). So, what I do, is I go down the list MIDDLE-clicking on each HIGHLIGHTED TOPIC that I'm interested in. This opens them up in other TABS (I use FF) and once I go all the way down the list I close the main tab (thus skipping the TOPICS I don't want to read)... now, on each TOPIC-tab there is a list of THREADS... new ones are HIGHLIGHTED in the same fashion as before. And I do the same thing... I middle-click on threads I'm interested in and just pass over the ones I'm not. Then I close that page.

What's nice, doing it that fasion, is that on the old board when I would return if no NEW posts had been made to, say, "Edged Weapons" but I hadn't actually READ that TOPIC previously, it still will no longer be HIGHLIGHTED. It will only highlight if something changed since my LAST visit. The new board doesn't do that, it stays highlighted until I actually go into the topic and open up each updated thread.

HOWEVER, just clicking on "view all new messages" is just as simple and seemingly even easier; so now I don't care that my old method doesn't work... I just need to modify my habit, that's all.

Hope that makes sense, but it probably doesn't matter much if it doesn't.

I guess what I would like to see, though, is a feature that allowed me to be sent automatically to the "view new messages" page upon logging on... I wonder if that's an option on this new board???

It took a bit of getting used to, but now I really like this board. It is much cleaner, easier to use, and customizable than the old one.

The first day drove me crazy though...trying to figure out how to do what I wanted.
