Both my kids know I carry. I have talked with them several times that they are not to tell anyone else about it. I have also talked about gun safety with them several times, and continue to review it with them, so they will know what to do should they come across a gun.
How old are your kids?

I have a 15 year old son who has known from day one that I had a permit and was almost always packing. This has been helpful in a few situations.

I am also *VERY* proud that he has been able to argue with anti-gun teachers who tried to teach their beliefs instead of facts. He has never lost an argument based completely on facts even won an argument with a Dare Officer once.

I also went through a rough time period medically and I wanted him to know I was carrying so that he could explain to paramedics or police why I had a gun if I needed to be treated. I know people who were not treated until police arrived because paramedics found a gun.

Last but diffinately not least I want him to know in case I am attacked or blindsided before being able to pull the gun. If he has a chance to get to my gun to protect himself that is great. He is a great shot and knows where to shoot to stop the attacker.

He has also had the opportunity to help with my classes when I have held basic and advanced defensive handgun classes as well as the CFP class. The kid even loves to do Pin Shooting with my Colt Government 1911 A1. I can't shoot it much because it bites but he loves it and shoots it like a pro.

In fact I can safely say I would trust him as my back up should an emergency happen. I think the younger they are when you expose them the better. Then it is not new they do not have to learn to act different it will all be instinct.

My $0.02 worth.

I have two kids that are 8 and 9 and they are my wifes kids but i always have guns around me,either cleaning them or carrying them and i have let them shoot them. They know the rules and they know i carry most of the time but it is not a big deal and me and my wife have talked to them about it. They may tell there dad but i dont care cause it might deter him from doing something stupid. Also like others i dont want others knowing i carry so i have the advantage plus i dont like a person that carrys two guns and several mags.

My kids have known since they were very little that mom keeps a gun in the house, and that we take one with us every where we go. It is not a big deal to them at all, and when they were little, I would take it out, unload it, and show them it was unloaded, and then go over the safety rules with them, and then let them hold it. When we go somewhere, I dont worry about them saying something, because it is an ordinary thing for them.

Kewl, some female feedback! Welcome to the forum, Annie -- it's kewl to hear about women teaching their kids about guns and about women carrying. There are a few of you here (my wife carries but doesn't participate in the forum) but it's always kewl to see another female here and to hear their perspective.

Except for when she's impersonating you....
HAHA... BTW, to end her last thread... she did get a Kel-Tec P3AT and she got a Galco ankle holster which she wears tucked into her sock. Other than skirt days, which are rare (she's still trying to find a good thigh holster for that, but for now just carries IWB with an Uncle Mike's which works decently enough). She packs pretty much everywhere everyday and seems to be doing just fine with her choices.

oh and my kids DO know I carry. My son has come with me to several CFP classes that I have taught and he is also starting to "teach" with me at these classes. I have him tell the students the "4 basic firearms safety rules" and he does GREAT at it. Also, I had my son read me and his sister the owners manual of their Cricket .22's before we went shooting. Even to this day, I have them tell me the safety rules BEFORE WE GET OUT OF THE CAR to go shooting. EDUCATE, EDUCATE, EDUCATE.......Teach them.... Ok, now I'll SHUSH up

My kids shoot, and know that I carry. I usually OC, so it's pretty difficult for them not to know, but they've realized that I'm pretty much always armed. We've had some good discussions about how everyone is safer when law-abiding citizens are armed, and they're very positive about my carrying, in spite of the fact that the schools teach them that guns are EVIL.
