Fred Thompson on the 2nd Amendment

The more I hear and read about Fred Thompson, the better I like him. I also think that he stands a much better chance against the Democrats in 2008 than any of the other contenders for the Republican nomination.

Here is Fred on the 2nd Amendment: A New York State of Mind

Personally, I think Fred Thompson represents my views on the right to keep and bear arms much more than Mitt Romney, who has a spotty record on gun laws. He signed a so-called Assault Weapons Ban into law as governor of Massachusetts and is unpopular on the gun forums I've visited. The other current front-runners are worse on the 2nd Amendment than Romney.

Jeff, to tell the truth, I find it hard to be thrilled about anybody who helped pass the Lautenberg Amendment, who voted to allow the FBI to retain Brady check information indefinitely and who voted for McCain-Feingold, among other things. To me, Thompson's voting record doesn't seem to support his current stand on the Second.
Hmmmm. Can you point me to online voting records that show Fred casting those votes?
Let me take a quick look - I'm a little pressed for time at the moment....

OK, here's something from GOA:

I think we need to be a little careful about propaganda.

I would hate to have to explane everything I have said agbout guns in the past.

In my case and Fred's, it is the present that counts.

With so many candidates embracing "gun rights" these days, from Romney to Guiliani to McCain etc., etc., I think a more historical perspective is a better indicator of deep-seated beliefs than a candidate's current utterances. Perhaps I'm a bit cynical.

I'm just waiting for the photo op of Hillary duck hunting with a .410.

That is a good one.

I might also note that I am not a one issue person. and my decerning eye looks deeper than recent propaganda. I think you are right about most of the candidates, but not all.
