I am planning to purchase several guns in the next 1-10 years. I know that is pretty vague, but the point is I will at some point buy an AR-15, another pistol or two, another hunting rifle, a shotgun, etc. I'm wondering what everyone's read of the political scene is relative to guns. In particular, do you see restrictions coming in the next few years? It's obviously better to buy today, but assuming a person can't, how risky is it to wait? For example:
  • What do you think will happen if a Obama/Hillary wins president for the next 8 years? What will happen if McCain gets it for the next 8 years?[/*]
  • Will we see another assault weapons ban similar to the last decade?[/*]
  • Will my ability to purchase AR-15's or similar rifles change in the next 10 years?[/*]
  • Will the SCOTUS case have any bearing on availability in Utah?[/*]
I'm not looking for a point by point analysis, just any general feelings for the near future (now to ten years from now).

[EDIT - I fixed your attempt to make a list -- Jeff]

There are two opposing factors in the near future.
The D.C. vs. Heller case before the SCOTUS could have a tremendously positive impact on the right to keep and bear arms, opening the door to challenging all sorts of unconstitutional gun-control laws. (There's also a possibility that they could rule against us too  )
There's a very real possibility of getting Hillary or Obama in the White House, with a gun-grabbing Dem majority in Congress. That's a very bad combination and you can bet that unless we have the backing of an excellent ruling from the SCOTUS in Heller, they'll start banning guns again. It's really hard to call at this point, in my humble opinion.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The DC case result will be the most telling factor before the election.

My advice to everyone is, buy an AR15 stripped lower NOW!! No matter who wins in November, we are possibly looking at a re-run of the Brady Bunch. If you can't afford a complete AR, at least get the stripped lower. They can be had for just over $100.
