Good places to shoot around Davis County

9004 Views 31 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  usSiR
The purpose of this thread is to give anyone who is not from around here a good place to shoot without paying range fees. Ammo is enough, don't need to pay the man also.

Please be specific in your directions.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Interestingly, there is a good place to shoot just a few miles from this point, above Richmond.
Where? I'd like to know exactly how to get there? Got GPS coords? Or a map?

Here is a map of the area. The red circle shows the center of the GPS coordinates.
You're off by one degree of latitude. This puts you in the middle of a field in Cache Valley. You can probably shoot there, but some farmer will probably run you off. :D It should be 40°N and this map shows 41°N.

I was wondering what in the world you would be doing almost in Idaho, when you are answering a question about shooting in Davis County. Just so you know I have topos for the entire US on my computer, but like most normal people I always find locations in degrees and decimal degrees. I had to temporarily change my preferences to allow degrees, min. and sec. so that I could find the spot. In all that confusion I entered the wrong North coordinate. I have fixed my error.

Thanks for marking the map. The coordinates show that it is off of skyline drive. Is skyline accessible to 4x4 vehicles or only quads? Can I drive my truck up there without getting in trouble with the federalies? Also, it this area acceptable for camping overnight? Fire restrictions?

Drive your Cadillac up there if you want.

Darn, the cats out of the bag. This is my place to shoot. 5 minutes from my house. I was hoping it would stay Richmonds little secret. Seems like there are more and more out-of-towners (anyone that doesn't live in Richmond qualifies) up there shooting all the time. Its a great spot to shoot. So anyway here are the directions:

Get on 300 East in Richmond and at around 600 South, you turn East on the only dirt road there and drive up the dirt road. At the fork stay left. Its only about 1-2 miles up the road MAX.

I only have 1 condition for giving out these directions, If you choose to go up there shooting, you darn well better PM me and invite me to meet you there!

Tarzan, have you shot at this range before?

No.

But I have shot at many different places over the years that started out as good places to shoot, and then over time people start to bring stoves, couches, refrigerators, cars and so on out to the range and shoot them up, and they leave trash and so on. It usually ends up that someone complains to who ever owns the property and they close it down.

Many times it is not the locals but some one from another area that comes in and trashes the local range.

I had a place not far from where I live that was closed for this very reason. People had been shooting there for 40 years but no more.

I didn't mean to step on any toes...just a pet peeve of mine.

I went there today and shot a few rounds. Seems like there are a few places to shoot on the way up there. I even saw a place where someone was shooting skeet from the road. I too, shot a few rounds there on the way down, but I was more careful. Thanks for the info., I had a lot of fun exploring the trails.

So have you gone up the hill that you shoot into, the red dirt one?
I've gone up that red dirt road before, it just loops around at the top, real short, and puts you back on the flats, you would need a jeep, atv or truck with a lift to go on it. I've almost been on every trail up there is lots of places to shoot. I really really don’t recommend shooting from the road, there is a trail below, its really nice to hike on. You get on it from the spot where the pavement meets the gravel road at the bottom at that little parking spot and take the trail south east, it takes you to a water fall.

But there are lots of places to shoot up there. The place I gave, the road just past the camp site
has gotten a little rough over the years you cant really drive a car up there anymore, but a truck or jeep will do.
