32 people shot, 6 killed, in violent Chicago weekend

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- An epidemic of gunfire rattled the city during the weekend, with at least 32 people shot and six killed.

Police Superintendent Jody Weis blamed an excess of guns and gangs for the rash of violence.

"There are just too many weapons here," Weis said at a news conference Sunday. "Too many guns, too many gangs."

At the time of that news conference, the toll was 26 separate shootings and four deaths. Later, three more shootings were reported within two hours on the West Side late Sunday and early Monday, resulting in two more deaths and four more people wounded, police said.

Watch police say number of shootings not so unusual.

The other weekend shootings were scattered all over the city. Police said they included gang shootings, drive-by attacks, and even one case in which someone used an AK-47 to shoot up a plumbing supply store.

Authorities did not immediately say whether any of the shootings were thought to be related.

During the same weekend last year, there were 19 shootings, including four homicides, and 21 shootings were reported during the same weekend in 2006, Chicago police statistics show.

On Saturday, the Police Department issued new statistics showing that the city's murder rate for March was down about 1 percent from March 2007.

I watched the video in that link. Police Superintendent Jody Weiss said the following, "I think that we need to do whatever we can to take the weapons off the streets."

Hmmm ... not 'get the criminals off the streets?

Obviously, the guns have minds of their own and were running around victimizing the poor gang members and bystanders.

With a mindset like that from the top cop in Chicago, no wonder they've got problems. :disgusted:

I spent most of this week travelling in Missouri and Illinois. I was able to take my gun because I was flying into and out of Missouri, which is very gun friendly. Of course, Illinois has pretty much made gun ownership illegal and I had to rely on federal laws that allow transportation of a locked-up (e.g., totally worthless) firearm.

We toured several of the Mormon history sites including Nauvoo. One theme that was very prevalent was that the early saints did all they could to maintain their firearms and that the states did all they could to disarm them. At one site, they stated, "The saints knew that if the state successfully disarmed them, they would be at the mercy of the mob or government." How ironic is it that the state the sought foremost to disarm this honorable and law-abiding populace in the 1840's has succeeded to do so today - and with results like this.

Shootings such as these simply make the czar (mayor) hot for more gun confiscation. He and his council henchmen have plenty guns for themselves and think everybody else is too stupid to own them. He is too thick headed to realize guns in the right hands would make a big difference. As long as the sheeple keep reelecting him this will continue just as in DC. Nothing worse than a bunch of liberal extremist running the city and the whole state for that matter. We in Illinois are not anywhere near having CCW permits.

I lived in the Chicago suburbs for 20 years and the only thing I miss is the food. I could really go for an Italian beef sandwich right now. 8)

It's really an odd mentality to say the least. Most of the people I knew were OK with hunting arms such as shotguns and rifles but some of them did not like handguns or those evil black "machine guns" as one of them put it.

The mayor and others like him enjoy the power that they hold. There needs to be a political revolution in Chicago before any of this is going to change. That is only going to happen when people wake up and say "enough is enough, time to take security into our own hands."

I miss those too

I use to live in Downers Grove, I never want to go back.
This just proves criminals will be criminals and law abiding citzens are at their mercy, laws there are pathetic... I'm just going to stop now.

Locks only keep out the honest and laws are only obeyed by them. I know if I planned on committing a felony... say GTA, I wouldn't really worry about the misdemeanor of not using my turn signal or wearing a seatbelt if I got caught.
