How to Respond..

Well I open carried for the first time last evening and it went without a hitch but I kept thinking to myself "what exactly would I say if some passer-by wanted to know why I was carrying?"
Would it be best to just tell them because I feel it necessary to protect myself and it is not against the law? or is there some other way of explaining it that would most effectively do the job?
I know every situation is different but maybe some of you have good insight on what is most common...
Also this applies to when I do start concealing and if I were to ever be "made" and confronted about it.

People generally won't ask you "Why are you carrying a gun?" It's not a polite question. They will think, "OK, this guy has a gun, cops have guns, perhaps he's a cop." So they will either not ask you or they will say "Are you a cop/detective?" In this case you should be honest and say "No, why do you ask?" Then they will bring up your gun. Then you can say "Oh, well, in Utah it is legal to carry a firearm openly and I choose to do so for personal protection." If they have other questions, you may answer them as you like.

If you want to be a smart-aleck, when they ask "Why do you have a gun?" you can ask them in reply, "Why don't you?" They will most likely respond that they don't need a firearm, to which you can say "I do". Then they ask "Why?" and you can say, none of your [darn] business (not recommended) or you can say "Do you have fire extinguishers in your house?" They will hopefully say "yes" then you say, "Why?" They will respond "In case there is a fire." Then you say "So how would that help you?" They will explain the usage/effects. Then you can say, "Just like a fire or other disaster, you never know when or where crime will happen, I carry a firearm to protect myself in case crime finds me."

There are a million answers to your question. The main thing to remember is that this is your personal decision (carrying a sidearm) and it's nobody's business why you have it (even law enforcement). You can tell them if you want, but you are not obligated to do so. Being that it is on your hip and you are not waving it around should be a pretty good indicator that it's usage is self-evident. But then again, some people don't think before they talk and have a difficult time using rational thought to deduce answers for themselves.

I get a lot more looks from young guys than older people. I have had people come up to me just to tell me that they carry too, or that they like to see people carry.

:agree: This is an excellent answer, and one that I will use the next time friends/family question why I have guns in my home. :)

Well there are really only 3 types of people who will ask about your gun:

1. Another gun person
2. Someone who does not like guns
3. Someone who is curious

Type 1 will be easy to figure out as they will say something like "Cool, what type of gun is that"
Type 2 and 3 will usually ask if you are a cop, when you say No they will ask How/why you carry a gun. If they are clearly anti I will give a short answer that basicly ends the conversation, but if I think they really are interested I will go into some detail about laws and such.

Q: "Why are you carrying a gun?"

... Don't you read the newspaper? Everyone, including me, who has a gun, does so because they feel like it compensates for the humiliating size of their reproductive organs.

... Because I've never figured out how to fit a police squad into my pants. Except for this one time -- but I was in college then.

... Are you Mormon? (If yes: It's for when the Gaddianton Robbers attack) (If no: It's for when the Mormons try to take over the world.)

... This isn't a gun, it's my pez dispenser.

... It's my iPod case mod. (Best if you actually have ear buds -- which you won't 'cause you need your situational awareness)

... What, you mean to tell me this isn't the horrific Bambi-killers/NRA festival?

... I don't think the way a person dresses should affect how you judge that person.

... Because if Seung-Hui Cho walks in, I wanna make sure he shoots me first.

... I didn't have room in my safe for this one -- so it's on my belt for safe keeping.

Okay, I'm not as funny as I thought.

Ishpeck, you forgot one: "I am hunting fascists" :lolbang:

When asked why, I typically respond with: "The day you or the police can guarantee my safety then I will put it away" :D
Another good one is:

"I carry a gun for the same reason I wear a seatbelt. I hope I never need it, but if something unexpected happens, I certainly don't want to be caught without it."
I like one I heard on another forum, "Because cops are always too heavy to carry."

Don't you read the newspaper? Every person who has a fire extinguisher owns it because they intend on burning their house down.

And everyone who has a Utah CFP has it because they want to escalate a fender-bender into a lethal force situation!

I love it when someone actually goes so far as to use the word "handgun" specifically.

"Why do you carry a handgun with you?"

"Because I can't sit down if I put my shotgun in my pants."

I am SOOO gonna steal that line for next time.
"Why do you carry a handgun with you?"

So when you are with me, you won't have to.

It was about a sexual harassment suit that resulted from some red coat trying to reach into a Yank's pants and take his gun away from him.

"You can't take my gun without reaching into my pants. And no matter how desperately you and so many others may want to be in there, it's just not logistically or morally possible. Sorry."
