I went to an IMAX movie at Jordan Commons (9400 South State Street, SLC) and noticed that they have a notice on their entry doors stating "No weapons allowed". They also had a metal detector at the entrance to the individual theatre doors. I am planning on writing a letter to the manager and encourage you to do the same if you enjoy this particular theatre. They can be reached online at: [email protected] or you can snail-mail them at:

Thanks!

Dave, were the metal detectors manned and did patrons have to put change and keys in a basket to go around the detectors? Did theater personnel wand those who still beeped?

There were two employees tearing tickets on either side of the metal detector. They had put up the belt fence so you had to pass through the gate. I was not required to remove anything and I did not hear any alarms when anyone went through. Also, I did not see any wands or other detection devices. Oh yeah, and they didn't make me take off my shoes either

I know what you are getting at - sometimes an illusion is all it takes, sometimes it isn't. Protect yourself as you see fit.

I'd spread this message to as many of the Utah gun groups as possible.

To me this amounts to unreasonable search and seizure. Fight it hard as they are Way out of line here!

Just joined and just visited this thread.
Noticed it is a couple months old as well.

Jordan Commons is usually my theater of choice being so close to my abode.

Been there a couple times over the past few months and saw no signs, nor metal detectors.
I don't remember ever seeing signs or detectors any of the times I've been there, starting with grand opening day one.

I've carried every time I've gone there, since grand opening day one.

Granted I haven't been back since I went to go see Spiderman 3, but it was at the IMAX theater there. They had the dopey looking metal hoop detectors that we had to walk through (no, nothing like the airport), these were more like the merchandise theft detectors at retail stores. When I saw this I thought, "Wait, I didn't see any signs!" So I looked around, and sure enough on the doors that go outside there was a sentence prohibiting weapons written with the little sticker letters near the bottom of the door - like anyone is going to see it there.

Anyways, if the warning/detectors (non-functional) have been removed, I might just patronize Jordan Commons once again, until then, it's on my boycott list.

Please let me know if they have revoked their policy.

Maybe I'm just not looking for signs knowing they don't mean much in these parts.

Saw Spidey 3 there about a month after it opened, same with Transformers.
I think that's the last two movies I saw, and the last 2 I saw there.

I am no fan of Mr. Miller but sometimes a no weapons sign is just that. It is not an indicator of policy. It is likely the legal precursor in case they have an incident. Also when I went to see a preview there I got wanded and the guy informed me it was just for the camera thing. I ankle carry so no beeping. Same with the Imax stuff. They just don't want cameras in there which is understandable. Us concealed guys if we just keep it concealed and don't make a fuss are usually just fine.

I will try to make a nice OC trip to Jordan commons and see what results. I know there are doors that don't have signs, and most people wouldnt notice a shotgun on my back, let alone a pistol on my hip.

Dave:
I have been to the IMAX theater you are talking about and I didn’t see any “No Weapons” signs (maybe I just wasn’t looking for one) I have been to Jordan Commons many times and always carry into the theaters. My wife and I went to an IMAX movie there one night, I don’t recall what it was, and I did see what I thought were metal detectors. Turns out the gates that I thought were metal detectors were sensor gates. They were handing out 3D glasses for the movie and the glasses had a small chip imbedded in them so that if you tried to pass the sensor gates with the glasses an alarm would go off, turns out they were just trying to keep their 3D glasses from walking away.
I will send a letter to them though, just because I don’t care for Larry Miller. I don’t “Know this guy.” And if I did I would borrow money from him.

So that's what those detectors are for. they didn't look like the traditional airport metal detectors, more like merchandise tag detectors. There weren't any signs, the warning was in sticker lettering on the outside entrance doors about a foot from the ground (if I recall). There weren't any signs once you entered the complex.

Thanks for your support - needless to say, I haven't been back since that incident. Let me know if their policy changes, I still haven't received any response from my correspondence.

"Weapons" would include knives, pepper spray, guns, even a slingshot. If my wife goes to a movie at night with friends and comes out in a dark parking lot she takes out her pepper spray on the way to the car. And I always carry a knife in my pocket, something I've done since like twelve years old since I was in Boy Scouts. Now with my firearm on the way I'll be carrying that. I'll write something ASAP.

I've been there a few times and never noticed the signs, although I wasn't looking. I would rather enter, be asked to leave, then disarm, get robbed and regret it afterwards. :D Although, still waiting on my permit!!! Will still carry when I go.
