Last night the radio show host of KSL Nightside, a transplant from California, brought up the subject of concealed carry in school and how it should be the same as church: not allowed.

His argument is that CCW guns have no place in school and should a columbine event happen at school then only the SWAT team is trained enough to handle it. He stated that no other state on our borders allows CCW in school, therefore, we shouldn't either.

He also referenced a KSL/Deseret News poll which claims that 64% of Utahns don't think that CCW guns should be allowed in schools. He interviewed a state senator and through in all sorts of loaded questions.

What is the deal with KSL now?

Someone should tell him the only reason we don't carry in our listed church is because it's against the law.

What made me the most upset was a caller travelling to SLC who is a LEO in Long Beach, CA. He agreed that only SWAT should approach a school shooter, and that he thinks Utah LEOs are crazy because if he knew someone had a gun in the car, even with a CCW, he would have 5 guys there to back him up before approaching.

What is this world coming to?

Let's see... states around us restrict CCW in schools, so Utah should go along with that? One of the lessons my dad and mom taught me was that just because someone else does something, that doesn't mean I have to do it too. I'm sure we've all been taught that idea from the time we were wee ones.

And while I tremendously respect the SWAT teams and their training (heck, all LEO's, for that matter), and would gladly let them handle things like the Columbine shootings, I think the real lesson of Columbine is that people died before the police could repond. What would some parents have given to have someone with a CCW there who could have stopped the shooting a lot sooner?

I think the people on the "Nightside Project" aren't playing with a full deck. I've sent a message to KSL pointing that out... with a little nicer language.

These are not journalists, they are propogandists. They are taught in journalism school to report to "make a difference," not to inform. I don't pay attention to KSL because they've always been this way from what I have seen. Nothing new, here.

... Columbine ...
Considering I have a sibling that came close to losing thier life at Columbine. Yes, the SWAT team did go in... after the criminals committed suicide, IIRC.

My intent is not to impune the brave LEOs, but people don't think before they shoot their mouth off.

Nor, of course, does it suit their agenda to talk about the shootings where the criminals were stopped by civilians (two I can think of OTTOMH who had to run to their cars to get their weapons, ahem).

... he thinks Utah LEOs are crazy ...
Well, what does that say about him?

IT'S ALL ABOUT PUSHING THEIR ANTI-FREEDOM VIEWPOINT.

Its sad to say, but most of the time all LEOs and SWAT can do is respond to the aftermath. Even if we hired 100,000 more police for Utah they still couldn’t be everywhere. Unless each person has an officer escort at all times then our personal defense is up to each one of us. Police do the best they can, but your local Wal-mart has more employees than the local police force. Even if each school hired 50 armed personnel to prevent these deadly crimes it wouldn’t be enough for someone truly determined to go on a killing spree. The biggest point to make against ANY gun laws (or any laws for that matter) is really simple: Only the HONEST obey the laws, Criminals don’t. Why make laws to stop people who don’t follow laws?

Yes, just another ignorant person shooting his mouth off. Apparently, he didn't think about the mistakes made at Virginia Tech, both by law enforcement and school officials. And, again, the mayhem ended because the shooter killed himself. I fully support law enforcement officers. However, they more often than not react to crime, not prevent it.

The transplant apparently does not read NRA's Armed Citizen, or otherwise hear about crimes being prevented through the actions of concealed carry permit holders.

Tell me which school you rather go to:

This one: http://www.vpc.org/press/0304pa.htm

or this one: http://www.davekopel.com/2A/OthWr/principal&gun.htm

Perhaps the transplant needs to see how many school shooting there are in Utah: http://www.svrc.net/ShootingsMap.htm

The scary part is some people buy into gun control. Fortunately, most of our state legislators know better.
