I'm looking to buy a new handgun in .40 caliber to replace my first carry piece, a Kel-Tec P-11. I've got some actual money to spend this time (as you can guess, I bought the Kel-Tec when I had very little), but I'm still trying to find the best firearm for the money.

I've always wanted a Glock 23 or 27, but any brand in that size range (small to medium sized) would fit the bill. Anyone have any suggestions? I'll be carrying it in an IWB holster, and I prefer DAO, but with proper practice I can learn to live with something else. I know relatively little about the different manufacturers out there, but would like to do some research online before going to a dealer and looking in person.

Also, what's considered the best place to buy in northern Utah? I live in Price, but I will most definitely not be buying down here.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

For shooting / purchasing I like "Impact Guns." I think they are in Ogden, im snot sure how far Price is from there.

If you are looking for a reliable subcompact...I would look at the Springfield Armory XD pistols. I have a 9mm XD subcompact and it is my favorite gun. It is the smallest gun in its class, but very accurate. My buddy has an XD sub in .40 and he loves it.

They are picking up a stron reputation for being a great gun. They are very similar to Glock, but have a grip safety and other little differences that I prefer. They also cost about $100-150 less than a Glock, depending on where you buy one. I carry it over my H&K USPC .40, cause it has everything I need in a carry gun.

I have purchased from Galyn's, but after the buyout by Dick's, and their lack of support for handguns, I have stopped sending any of my money their direction. I have also purchased handguns from Gallenson's in downtown SLC. They have a good selection and counter help. There is no range there, so if you are looking to shoot different things to decide, go elsewhere.

I agree with the Barchetta comments about the XD series, but only own the 9mm sub. I suppose the .40 is similar. Mine is a solid gun. I am also very happy with my Glocks. There are a few subtle differences that the XD has that you will either see as:

1. Great extra safety features
or
2. Meaningless flourishes since your safety is between your ears

....to each his own...

I'm seconding the comment about buying from Impact Guns. They have a new store location at 47th South and just west of 40th West. It used to be Totally Awesome Guns & Range. That may be closer for you. However, you can also visit the website www.impactguns.com and take a look around.

They will take good care of you. I recommend you go see Crystal at the store and talk to her about the Springfield XD or a GLOCK. I will be going for an XD subcompact in .40 myself, just because I like how it feels in MY hand, compared to a similar GLOCK.

I have had some people say similar things about the grip safety. Things like, "its just one more thing to deal with." It is depressed when you have a firm grip on th gun...I dont think you should take a shot without a tight grip. :D

The main thing is a gun is an expensive investment. Buy the one that leaves you with a smile on your face..

If you check KSL.com (classified) you will find alot of guns there. I shoot a Sig p239, 9mm. It's a good carry gun. I have never shot anything smoother or as accurate. Picked it up for $420, used. They have that in 40 cal but are a bit pricey for new ones.
And I have also heard good things about the Springfield and Glocks. Remember if you can't hit what your shooting at, all the bells and whistle wouldn't mean a thing.
The situatation that you're in is one of the best in life. To have to find, and buy a new gun! You must research, look at, fire if you can, and dream of that coiled steel marvel.
Good luck.

I have a Glock 23, and absolutely love it.

You said it yourself - you'd like a 23 or 27. Go with the 23.

Rangemasters in Springville is a great shop. Van Wagenen's in Orem (state street) is probably the cheapest you'll find new and used glocks.

Thanks for all the replies, you guys are a great resource for information regarding all things CCW. :) I might try to make it up to the SLC area this weekend to try out a Glock 23 and a Springfield XD40 (either 3" or 4", I'll have to wait and see how each feels in my hand). The Sig looks good too, but I think the price it just a little too far out of my range.

As for the P11, I'm probably too lazy to put forth much effort in selling it, but I'd be willing to take any reasonable offer. I'd just have to do some research into how much they're going for nowadays.

Well, thanks again for all the recommendations. The almighty dollar ended up making my mind up for me, and I bought a Springfield XD-40 Sub-Compact on Tuesday. So far, I love it! I've only fired a few rounds through it, but it's much better than my old carry piece (a Kel-Tec P-11). I plan on doing some serious target shooting this weekend with it, though I doubt I'll be disappointed with the accuracy and comfort of several magazines' worth of range shooting.

I've still never fired a Glock, which these Springfields are supposed to stack up against very well, but I think I made a good decision. No matter what, the Springfield is a good upgrade from a Kel-Tec. :)

Here's a picture of my new beauty:

I hope you're not just 'satisfied' with your purchase. You made a VERY good decision. Springfields are some of the finest shooters I have ever played with. The new XD45 is absolutely awesome.

You made a SUPER decision.
