I think I am going to take a local two day tactical shotgun course next time FBMG offers it. I want some opinions on what makes a good tactical shotgun.

There wasn't an "everything" option.... it's got to have everything.

What part of everything is the other?
What part of other isn't everything?

Maybe something with a proven reputation... all of the features you want, plus expandability... availability of parts (aftermarket and OEM). Something with a 'cult' following? Do you prefer pump or semi auto? What are the features you appreciate the most?

The top of the poll says tactical Pump so I want a pump. The only reasons I can see going with a semi are; injured hand, detachable magazine.
I dont have much money either so my choices are also budget influenced.

I thought about the norinco 870 ripoff because, after market support is there (most parts interchange with 870s) by most accounts the norinco is also well made. The norinco also has one of my most expensive must haves, ghost ring sights, but its a Chinese made ripoff of an American product. I choose not to support china whenever possible.

Given my price range my favorite choice is out the 870 equipped with Ghost rings its out of my budget and, dose not come from the factory in that configuration.

Mossberg has a alot more options and the ghost rings are far less expensive. Right now my dilemma is save for a 590 special purpose with 8 or 9 round tube and the sights I want for $400ish or a used 500 with a fixed 5 round capacity for $200.00 out the door.

Some time down the road I will have to Vang Comp any defensive shotgun I get. A 500 5 shot with ten more yards effective range with buck would beat the heck out of the most tweaked 870 with out the VC barrel.

Last point in my decision making process might be instant versus delayed gratification, meaning I can get the 500 now. I might still hsve to see what the next gun show brings.

In my opinion every long gun that is to be used as a fighting gun/self defense gun, should have a weapon mounted light on it. It is difficult to get well placed shots while you are holding a flash light and the forend at the same time.

Long guns especially a pump I think you are right. Handguns not so much I use the FBI technique for that. Only on TV do you use a light weapon mounted or not constantly on. BULLET MAGNET

If I am using a shotgun odds are I am at home, If I am at home it is dark. So I voted Light. But the more equipted you are the better. If you have to get off more shots than a standard mag will hold you are pretty well screwed anyways, and aiming is a waste of time, just hip shoot the thing. :D

Inside of about 25 feel a good buckshot through an open choke is going to make a single hole 0.72-1.00 inches in diameter. For me aiming is only a waste of time in distances less than 10ft perhaps 15 with a long gun.

Bottom line, to many have to little understanding about employment of a shotgun. They don't shoot an all encompassing wall of death they need to be aimed.

used Mossberg 5 shot with GR sights 200.00
Rail forend 31.00
orforend option #2 70.00
Inexpensive 1in scope mount 15-20.00
light holder option #2 67.50
Good rayovac led light 25.00
Cost on the cheap with S&H 290.00ish

Wish list type stuff
Mesa shell holder 70.00
Knoxx stock110.00
Probably the best possible modification VCS unported barrel

I wholeheartedly agree with you on not supporting China wherever possible.

You might find something at the gun show next weekend. Budget and timing are the big factors in my gun collection. When I found my S&W3000 (another Rem 870 clone), I was in a pawn shop looking at the orphan guns (what else?) when she touched my heart. She was a police model complete with synthetic stocks for $180, I negotiated her adoption fees down to $140 and she was mine. Accessories for her have been hard to find since her model has been out of production for quite some time. But with a little patience I've been able to adorn her with pistol grip stocks, a mag extension and a 20" rifled slug barrel with rifle sights (though I did go back to her original forend since the dual pistol grip setup wasn't as comfortable to point shoot). I opted for the mag extension instead of a light under the barrel because she's more than an at home companion, sometimes I'll take her on hunting trips with one of my Rem 700s, more often though she comes with me rock hounding in the west desert during diamondback season or riding with me as a car/truck gun whenever I go on road trips.
