Saw this is on the floor in the Senate. Here's a link to the story:

This is the bill I think we have all been hoping for. With any luck, we'll see it make some progress. I don't have time to chime in for the comments, but someone here needs to! Even the pro-gun people on there are making weak arguments. The average pro-gunner there seems to be saying something along the lines of "as long as we can get companies to let us leave our guns in the company parking lot, everything will be fine"... clearly they are missing the point! Hopefully someone here can go chime in and correct them.

Here's my email to my Senator:

Senator Waddoups,

I am writing to you in reference to SB67, "Protection of Constitutionally Guaranteed Activities in Certain Private Venues", sponsored by Senator Madsen. I am in support of this bill and am asking for you to add your support to it as well.

Based on your reply to my email a few days ago regarding SB157, I feel safe in assuming you agree with my position on this bill as well. So, I'll spare you any lengthy argument. :)

If you have a different position on this bill, I would appreciate knowing so that I can both be aware of your position and argument as well as provide my own argument.

Thank You for Your Time and Representation.

The Trib chimes in..

I applaud this effort, but I still think they're going about this the wrong way. I think they should be enacting liability statutes for those who impede our ability to protect our own safety.

Considering that this bill only protects you to store your weapon in your car on-site (in lieu of actually being able to pack into work), I suspect this is only a first step and that the liability aspect will unfold next.

When do we anticipate this becoming law? Weeks, months, this year...?

Unfortunately this bill has been tabled for the last week or so; I am worried that it is going to die in committee... I have written my representative who is also on the House Judiciary committee, but I haven't gotten a response. This bill is a good move forward for our self-defense rights and I'd hate to see it left on the vine.

What a bummer. I just wrote a short and sweet email to my Senator asking him to do what he can to get the bill up for a vote.

I wrote to them as well. I hope they understand the importance...

I'm not sure.... but, while at first glance it certainly would SEEM that's what it means I google'd the term "notification of bill tabled" and found a couple of other Utah bills that use this term but have still gone on to have other actions taken on them. So, what I think it's really saying is:

1) The "HOUSE" is the party making the comment
2) And they are saying that they have taken note that the bill *WAS* tabled... implying, I guess, they are planning on taking another look at it. Who knows, maybe in part by a couple of our emails???

Take a look at these other bills to see my reasoning...

http://le.utah.gov/~2007/status/hbillsta/hb0397.htm

http://le.utah.gov/~2007/status/sbillsta/sb0066s03.htm

But I did find one or two others where this was the final line and the bill appears to have been dropped, so it seems like they are AWARE that it had been put on the back-burner and that it could still go either way.
