I have had my permit for about a year now and have never open carried. I would like to hear of your experiences with open carry wether good or bad. I am undecided with open carry because I don't know how people will respond.

I can't say I have ever had a bad experince. I have had incounters with other citizens that were un aware that you can carry open. They have mostly turned into me teaching them that it is legal but it helps to be prepaired with knowledge of the applicable laws or lack there of. I have even carried open to a presentation for a class at UVU and the teacher is an orem pd sargent. All in all they have all been rather positive. I sugest that you read up on open carry and why its legal becuse there are a few leos that don't know the law or lack ther of about open carry. You can learn more at this site There is a spcial state section for Utah and there is a lot of goo info specific to Utah. Good luck and be safe.

I think it would be a good idea to meet for lunch somewhere so that we can have a discussion on this subject. It would also be great if we could convince someone to talk to us about this, like maybe Mitch Vilos (author of Utah Gun Law). It would also be interesting to hear from the Ogden or some other city police chief so we can get their perspective on this. Who wants to organize this? Here is another thought. Maybe we can invite the press (newspaper or TV) because there is a huge lack of knowledge on this subject throughout the state.

I'd be willing to help put something together if I get some suggestions like lilredcobra offered.

Speaking of which, I just got an email from the Layton City police chief saying how he makes sure all his officers are up to date on firearm laws and with the recent bills in the legislature he will be conducting update training soon.

He seemed receptive to my inquiry, so he may be interested in something like this.

Yeah, it has been a few months... maybe just a simple lunch at Golden Corral with a local police chief in attendance for some handshaking and discussion about open carry efforts at the street level.

Barnes and Noble--that's scary. So many libs there. I'm surprised someone didn't call security.

Ah ha... well, I don't want to repeat efforts so soon.

It looked like only about 20 people attended the luncheon in December and there are many of us who did not get the opportunity to be there due to work/lack of knowledge of the get-together or whatever. I am encouraged by the interest generated by this topic and I believe we can accomplish a lot of good by inviting LEOs to these events so we can get their perspectives on the many issues we are concerned about i.e. "open carry", "campus carry either concealed or open", "our right to carry in Natl Parks", "the Washington D.C. issue before the Supreme Court concerning the right to bear arms", "no weapons allowed areas i. e. Trolley Square" and many many more. Saturdays are good for me also.

It almost sounds like you'd welcome the repeat of a WVCPD incident with the state's Chief LEO present... Do you think Mark would verbally or legally tear them a new one?
