I'm thinking about getting a .458 Socom. Not sure how soon, but I think it would be fun. I've beaked around a little bit for prices but not sure exactly what to get. I would rather not buy a custom gun that some of the manufacturers make, like CMMG, POF and others because they run around $2000 or so. I've seen uppers and lowers for sale between $400-$700 for lowers, and $500-1000 for uppers.

What would be a good middle ground rifle to get? Also wondering if I need to get a beefier lower to handle the round, or if a run of the mill lower would work.

This would just be a fun gun to shoot every now and then, and not something to shoot all the time. Ammo costs too much to shoot it a lot.

The .458 (almost 10X heavier than the 5.56mm 55 gr) was designed to address the lack of punch that the 5.56mm had in battles in the Middle East. It was designed to be 100% compatible with the M4 platform to include the buffer and buffer spring, magazines and the magazine well. So any reliable lower (spelled from a major manufacturer) should work. Rock River Arms makes the uppers, so going with a RRA lower would most likely be a good bet.

Ammo is expensive compared to the AR-15 and you only get 10 rounds in the standard 30 round AR-15 magazine. 1/3 the shots at 10x the weight in ammo might be a good idea for a shelter in place defensive firearm but I would hate to haul that puppy around with enough ammo to hold my own in a sustained firefight.

I've noticed that it's much more expensive than the 5.56. If I do end up getting one, it will be for light plinking use, and any rabid boars that come after me. Maybe possible hornet infestations. I hate hornets.

This won't be a rifle I'll be bringing on a ten mile hike either. Probably only nine mile hikes.

The only reason I would consider it is if I hunted. After having shot a 458, I would get a 9mm AR before picking one.

If you do go that route, you should probably learn to reload first ;)

If I end up buying one, it's mainly going to be a fun gun. Take it out now and then. Probably not hunting. I want to go boar hunting in Texas at some point. I think I would buy a .308 for that though.

I've heard the recoil can be pretty stout from a 458 Socom. What was it like for you?

Just looking at the cartridge and reading its ballistics, it sounds like a fairly narrow purposed design.
It felt like a 20 gauge from what I remember.
