I am soliciting this forum for their opinions and recommendations on a 45 ACP. What make and model of 45 would you guys recommend?

What are your preferences?
Budget?
Use? (carry, target general plinking)
Action type? (DAO DA SA)

The little Kimber Ultra CarryII I picked up last week is VERY impressive.

I like the Commander size 1911's, they have a full-size grip with a shorter barrel length.. The Colt Combat Commander, Kimber Pro, Springfield Champion, Ed Brown Carry, and Dan Wesson Classic Bobtail fall into this category.

Here is my Dan Wesson. It has the Bobtail feature:

This is what we really need to know.

I have a Springfield 1911 A1 GI, that I love (They are now running about $500) and I helped my son-in-law buy a Springfield XD .45 4 inch Service Model (They are also running about $500) I can highly recommend either of those.

I forgot to add one more. I shot Mr Magum's full-size S&W M&P 45ACP this weekend. I don't know if they make them in a mid-size model but the full-size was very accurate.

XD would not be a bad choice either.

Yeah, I guess those things are important.

Budget would be about $450-500 and it would be a carry weapon. I prefer the DAO and I have an XD in 9mm and so I am leaning towards that in the 45.

Thanks for the inputs so far. :)

I love my Springfield 1911. I would also go with the XD and, from my reading, the new XD-M. I like the Sig 220 and FNP in .45 as well.
I don't see where the XDm comes in .45 yet.

Considering you later specified this as a carry gun, set your budget at $500. and already have experience with XD and DAO triggers, an XD 45 should be a seamless transition to the 45 caliber.

Some others mention 1911's. I especially like Marshalldodge's personal choice. However, these will run you a few more bucks than you have alloted, and will have crisp SA triggers. There is a learning curve to go from DAO to SA. I know when I pick up a 1911 after shooting my XD45, that first shot can get away pretty quick.

Based on your criterea, an XD 45 service or compact model should fit the bill nicely.

Good luck~

Kahr CW45!!

Under $500, true DAO, accurate and way more concealable than any other .45, dare I say even the 1911 :p .

I have about 500 absolutely flawless rounds through mine and in a side by side comparison with the XD45 Compact I bought(and am now selling) the Kahr won hands down. Super comfortable grip. My only complaint is capacity 6+1 in the standard mag. Order a couple factory 7 rounders and stick one in your pocket(they are very slim). Thats my recommendation for a carry .45. If youre going to war and want a .45....XD45 Tactical all the way :shades:

Thanks for the clarification......

With that in mind...If you are a plastic gun kind of guy.....the XD .45

If you want to hold and shoot the best gun in history.... the SA 1911 A1 GI

The M&P45 does come in mid size and compact now.
Mid size is just 1/2" shorter barrel and the compact has the same 1/2" shorter barrel plus a shorter grip.

Combine those options with 3 different size grip inserts so you can adjust for the best fit in your hand. Then add in the M&P's renowned accuracy (as mentioned above) and I think you'd do well take a good look at one.
