President Bush has nominated Samuel A. Alito to the SCOTUS.

Here's a brief summary of his judicial history at the New York Times.

Note the paragraph near the end:

In a 1996 ruling that upheld the constitutionality of a federal law banning the possession of machine guns, Alito argued for greater state rights in reasoning that Congress had no authority to regulate private gun possession.

still leaves a problem, in that some states severely restrict gun ownership and/or the bearing of arms. So, unless the states also recognize 2nd Amendment Rights, a Supreme Court decision just to restrict the power of Congress won't help much.

It looks like he is just what we need, an honest man in the US Supreme Court who will stand up for the constitution and the law without bias--I hope.
