I saw in Cheaperthandirt.com's catalog an ad for a square slide spring for the 1911 to replace the stock 'round' spring for about 20 bucks. Has anybody ever used one and noticed an improvement/difference?

What's the advertised purpose of a square recoil spring? Is there a claimed improvement over the standard spring?
Supposedly "compacts more uniformly for less binding" and you're also changing the spring weight from the factory 16 to 21.5 lbs. which might make it harder for some people to rack the slide.

Square spring link.

OK, I understand now. I was envisioning a spring that was square rather than round. It's the wire that has a square cross-section.

Wonder what the failure rate on these springs are. Seems like a nick on the wire corner would serve as a stress-riser. The higher spring rate could be a little rough on the pistol and there might be a need to install stronger mag springs, also.
