I cannot believe the rash of killings that have been in the news the last two days. 5 killed at a city council meeting, husband kills wife teaching school, shooting at a department store, another shooting at a college today. What is going on? Is it the weather, the supposed "credit crunch," fallout from Super Tuesday, or just the moon phase? This influx of crime (and gun crime) too boot is insane and frankly terrible timing during an election year. I fear for my family and my ability to defend them after all of these events become politicized.

What is everyone else's views on these events? Just tragic happenings all at once, or something we really need to be worried about given the current political happenings?

Thanks for letting me vent...

And there's this guy who was just arrested for killing his wife:

Blunt force trauma.

A sign of the times, brother. A sign of the times. Unfortunately, and maybe because I am slightly calloused to this horrific place we all have to call home for each of our lives, each incident finds me stating the same phrase in my head over and over again: "Another case for cocnealed carry. Another case for concealed carry."

It is a very disturbing trend... Don't these idiots know they're not supposed to bring guns to gun-free zones?!?

Both. Crime is the local hot topic.

Let's see - it's an election year, the first Supreme Court case on the 2nd Amendment in 80 years is coming soon, and it's the middle of winter when there's traditionally little to report on. I'd say it's definitely the media pushing things. There was just a report the other day saying violent crime is down both in Utah and across the country - it was on page D9 (or something) of the paper.

I have no doubt that we romanticize the gunfights of the Old West. Most in our society have no problem seeing the need for guns back then, or even back in the 20's when the gangsters were big. But, they say, there is no need for guns now. We are a better, more evolved society.

I will admit that those living in the Old West need firearms for hunting, protection from animals, or hostile tribes or other humans more than we do in our cities. But the reality is that most settlers back then didn't use their firearms very often in self-protection from others in their own society. In other words, there weren't near as many gunfights as most think there were. I used to live near Tombstone and visited the "OK Corral" several times. We've even romanticized that event -- the "Corral" is really just a quite small area between buildings where a gunfight happened one night.

The reality is that guns are needed now just as much, and perhaps more, than in the past. We aren't worried about hostile animals in the cities (other than a bad dog or two). We are worried about school shootings, mall shootings, and other urban areas. I hope at some point people wake up and realize guns are needed for protection just as much now as they were in the past.

I tend to agree with Apolo. I think with the Supreme Court looking at the issue, the media is trying to push things one way or the other. But I have to say, as far as business goes, its been GREAT. just wish more people would get their permits not because of the elections.

This is why we need more people liscensed to carry a gun maybe we willsave the life of someone elses loved one one day

So why take our right away!!!
WROOOONG. "Licensed" to carry is REALLY BS. "Permits" are infringement on your 2nd Amendment rights.

Sure I do have the "EVIL" Permit but that's due to convenience when I need to CCW. I OC (Open Carry) more than anything. A permit just helps me to OC in the car fro example

There are alot of MORE people that needs to carry.

Just my .44
