SB 43 Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention in Public Schoo

This bill would establish a pilot program to teach 8th graders about firearm safety in public schools, specifically,

• A course described in 53A-13-106, which includes
  
  • Developing the knowledge, habits, skills, and attitudes necessary for the safe handling of firearms; and
  • Helping students avoid firearm injuries
• What to do if the student becomes aware of a threat against the school; and
• Active shooter preparedness

Students would have to have parent/guardian permission before receiving instruction, and firearms cannot be used while providing the instruction. The pilot program would have a sunset date of July 1, 2019.
