Maybe this will get some attention to the facts regarding just how miserable an option calling 911 and waiting for help to arrive (eventually) is:
Kelly McGinnis... who most people my age remember (fondly, at least for guys) as she appeared in Top Gun, was attached by a stranger in her NC home. She calls 911, and rather than actually being helpful, the 911 operator repeatedly asks her for her address, even after its obvious to anyone with more than a few working brain cells that she has dropped the phone as shes getting the crap beat out of her.
McGinnis is ok... not because the heroic boys in blue came charging to the rescue, but instead because she eventually got free from her assailant, fled her house in terror, and flagged down a passing motorist.
The upside of the whole thing is the last 5 seconds of the clip, where its mentioned that McGinnis has said that due to this incident, she has acquired a concealed carry permit and now carries a gun for self defense.
