And some people will back down for a blade that wouldn't back down for a gun, I've heard. I could be wrong, as I am more than 50% of the time, so please correct me if I am!
I also understand that having a knife and not knowing how to use it can be very hazardous... Very very hazardous... Any suggestions?
I've always figured that in a situation that a knife would be useful I could probably remove myself from the situation easier than I could fight my way out. If the guy has a gun then a knife is a bad idea and if he has a knife/club then he has limited range and I can run. That really only works if you are in reasonably good shape. This also assumes that you don't get cornered so it isn't a perfect system.
I would favor carrying a spare mag or two over a large knife. I've always been under the impression that a gun is much more intimidating than a knife though. I do always carry a decent sized folding knife, just in case, and I use it all the time so carrying it is actually very practical. You can carry a folding knife clipped to a pocket where it is visible and no one takes notice, a large fixed blade would probably attract more attention and is more difficult to conceal. There are some large inexpensive folders out there like the Kershaw Tremor that are quick to deploy and easy to carry.
Sorry if this sounds like I'm trying to talk you out of carrying your knife, I'm really not against it, I've just tried it before and I eventually stopped carrying it because it was cumbersome.
