Hunter Safety - Field Day Shooting Requirements

Hunter Safety Instructors,

What are the requirements / restrictions for the shooting portion of the Hunter Safety course?

1. Distance? 50' ?
2. Shooting position(s).
3. Number of rounds? 5 practice + 35 for score?
4. Accuracy - kill zone or groups?
5. Scope, reflex, or iron sights?

We get a number of parent/kid combinations at the range to practice for Hunter's Ed and none seem to know the requirements upon arriving or have vastly differing views on the requirements/restrictions.

I can't answer all of those questions, but I did find some answers on the DWR website.

1) Distance 50 ft with a 22 LR rifle.


4) Appears to be a choice of 3 targets - A rabbit, a squirrel, or a bullseye. Not sure about others, or how they are judged/scored.
5) Any iron sights, or scopes 6x or less. I assume this would include reflex sights, even though what I read didn't mention them specifically.

Click on the Download targets link to see the various targets. When you click on it, it gives a brief descriptor of the test, and the bullseye pdf mentions the sights that are allowed.
